The Toronto Community Benefits Network (TCBN) has centred itself at the forefront of the economic justice movement in Canada by negotiating Community Benefits Agreements (CBAs) into public infrastructure and urban development projects. In so doing, TCBN is addressing the challenges of access to good jobs, local economic development and neighbourhood revitalization particularly as they impact on historically disadvantaged communities and equity seeking groups in Toronto.

TCBN employs a comprehensive approach that includes organizing, innovative policy, research, and communications. TCBN’s efforts have led to Ontario’s first Community Benefits Framework with Metrolinx that includes a Community Benefits Apprenticeship Plan, the City of Toronto’s Community Benefits Agreement as part of the Casino Woodbine expansion and the establishment of the Toronto Community Benefits Framework in 2019. ROLE SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director, Community Benefits Campaigns, the Community Benefits Researcher is primarily responsible for leading community benefits research activities by supporting TCBN campaigns, initiatives and public policy goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Community benefits research: Lead all planning and community benefits research to support campaigns and initiatives
• Policy analysis: Support with community benefits policy strategy, planning, development, analysis and monitoring at municipal, provincial and federal levels
• Community based research: Utilize various research methods to collect, analyze and present community based research and best practices
• Coalition building: support coalition members and coordinate research activities with network members and community based partners
• Relationship building: establish strong working relationships with partners and stakeholders including community, labour, government and private sector
• Communication: effectively communicate with network members, partners and community through blogs, newsletters, mailings, webinars and meetings
• Other duties include: working as part of a team to implement the organization’s strategic plan; supporting volunteers; participating in team and other organization-wide meetings and activities

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to social and economic justice. Skills required:

• Experience working on public policy issues, inside or outside government, particularly in social and/or economic policy
• Strong interest in and knowledge of public policy, how it is made, and how it affects people’s lives
• Critical thinking and analysis skills
• Excellent communications skills and ability to work well with others
• Strong community outreach, organizing and engagement skills
• Detail oriented, driven to succeed; ability to work independently and in a team
• In possession of a valid drivers’ license and reliable, insured transportation
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., public policy, political science, economics) or comparable experience; graduate training is an asset
