Position: Community Host
The Community Host fosters an atmosphere of safety and inclusion with their warmth and kindness. As a member of the Community Support Team, they welcome participants, community and visitors to the centre and are often the first person people meet when they come to or call North End Women’s Centre. In addition to building relationships, the Community Host ensures that, the drop-in space is well organized and kept cleaned to infection prevention standards. The Community Host is a person that thrives in a direct-service, fast-paced and eventfully-diverse environment.
Education and Experience
- Experience and or education in crisis counselling, community support or related social services training is an asset
- Experience working with people, particularly women and women-identified people from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Experience working in a community based organization that values harm reduction
- Knowledge of, and experience working with Indigenous people in terms of the historical context, traditions, teachings as well as the unique barriers Indigenous women face
- Experience working or living in the North End of Winnipeg
Skills and Abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as a team member
- Ability to follow direction and make decisions within the parameters of the job
- Ability to work flexibly in a high stress environment; cover evening shift if needed
- Knowledge of the resources available in the community to women experiencing poverty, homelessness, gender-based violence, and/or problematic substance use

Duties and Responsibilities
- Community Host Responsibilities (in collaboration with Team Lead)
- To welcome visitors to the Centre and continuously promote a community understanding of the Centre’s vision, mission, objectives, policies, programs, and services.
- To coordinate the drop in area and ensure that participants are adhering to specific policies and guidelines of the Drop In as outlined in the Employee Policy and Procedure Manual
- To ensure all resources, pamphlets, brochures, and posters displayed are up to date and in align with the North End Women’s Centre’s philosophy
- To provide women with information regarding the various programs offered at the North End Women’s Centre and to register them for programs as appropriate
- To process snack orders for Drop- in and Community Support Team (snack storage)
- To complete data entry related to program requirements (monthly)
Administrative Responsibilities
- To open and close the Centre
- To keep appraised of trends in the community, political and socio-economical areas that may impact NEWC programs and services
- To answer phones and take messages for staff members ensuring they are accurately relayed through voicemail or message book
- To ensure the Centre’s garbage and recycling is put out for pick up in a timely manner and in
- accordance to the City of Winnipeg Standards
- To ensure recycling and garbage bins are unlocked/locked at the beginning/end of day
Other Duties
- To participate in staff meetings once a month
- To participate in team meetings bi-weekly
- To participate in relevant training opportunities as required
- To participate in monthly supervision meetings and annual performance reviews
Additional Requirements
- Valid Class 5 license and access to a safe and reliable vehicle an asset
- Satisfactory Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry Check
- Trauma Informed Certificate or willingness to attend training
- ASSIST Suicide Prevention Certificate or willingness to attend training
- Current CPR/First Aid training or willingness to attend training
- De-escalating Potentially Violent Situations training or willingness to attend training
Job Status: FT Term until March 31, 2022 with possibility of extension
37.5 hours per week (8:30-4:30pm) Monday to Friday. Flexibility to do evening work until 9pm
Salary Range: $18-$24 per hour (dependent on qualifications and experience)
