Wahbung Abinoonjiiag is a domestic violence prevention, healing and crisis center, established in 1994 to empower children and their families to end the cycle of violence. Wahbung Abinoonjiiag "Children of Tomorrow" is an Indigenous organization, providing opportunities for holistic healing through culturallyrelevant teachings, programs, advocacy and support services.
Background:
Under the general direction of the Manager of Programs and Administration and reporting directly to the Children and Youth Program Coordinator, the Children and Youth Program Helper is responsible for assisting in the delivery of child-centered, age appropriate programming to all children and youth in the centre, using a current understanding of child and youth development principles through a Traditional Indigenous lens.
The Children and Youth Program Helper works collaboratively with other program and centre staff to promote positive social, physical, emotional and cognitive development of children and youth (ages 0-17), while fostering a clean, safe and culturally sensitive environment that encourages healthy interaction and learning. The Children and Youth Program Helper will have the ability to work independently and within a team setting, while building successful working relationships with community partners and sister
organizations, maintaining the integrity, philosophy and values of the organization.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Assist with the development and facilitation of programming opportunities (in-person and/or virtual) that support the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children and youth (ages 0-17), while promoting the expression of creativity, individuality and positive social interaction, as directed by the Children and Youth Program Coordinator;
- Maintain an environment that promotes and protects the health, security and well-being of children and youth;
- Provide support, mentorship and advocacy for participants in a one-on-one and group setting;
- Ensure the safety of all children and youth at all times when at the centre;
- Work effectively with other Children and Youth Program Helpers, volunteers and families;
- Responsible for attending all meetings pertaining to the program and position (including community coalitions/committees, as directed), assisting with the facilitation of community council meetings and community engagement activities;
- Role model effective communication and caregiving skills and promote the use of Traditional Indigenous family values;
- Track daily program statistics, prepare weekly reports and attend program meetings;
- Prepare meals and organize mealtimes and snacks for children and youth programming, as needed;
- General cleaning and sanitization duties within the centre; and,
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Acceptable combination of education and experience working with and facilitating programming for children and youth ages 0-17;
- Experience working with children, youth, women and families who have experienced or witnessed domestic violence;
- Experience working in inner city and/or Indigenous communities in a not-for-profit setting;
- Proven knowledge and ability in critical thinking, decision-making, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills;
- Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous culture and traditions and the impact of colonization on the health and well-being of Indigenous children and families;
- Proven ability to work within a team environment with respect, professionalism, cooperation, sensitivity and cultural awareness;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills;
- Excellent organizational, leadership and time management skills;
- Current Infant/Child First Aid and CPR Certificate or willingness to obtain;
- Training/experience working with children with exceptionalities considered an asset; and,
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel is an asset.
Salary Range:
Contingent on experience/qualifications.
Hours of Work:
Full-time and part-time positions available, from 18 to 37.5 hours per week, beginning ASAP until March 31,
2022. Must be able to work a variety of shifts, including: days, evenings and occasional weekends.
