Summary
Raising the Roof is looking for a dynamic self-starter to lead Raising the Roof’s first satellite office Winnipeg, connecting with local donors and partners and helping scale up our successful, life-changing Reside program.

Description
About Raising the Roof

For 25 years, Raising the Roof has provided national leadership on long-term solutions to homelessness through partnership and collaboration with diverse stakeholders, investment in local communities, and public education. In 1997, Raising the Roof launched its first major fundraising campaign to help people experiencing homelessness and introduced the now iconic Raising the Roof Toque. That first year’s campaign raised $72,000 and since then over $8 million has been raised for over 200 homelessness prevention programs across Canada. Over the years, Raising the Roof has initiated several high impact public education campaigns and research projects which are informing national policy today. Two key findings from this research were the need for employment opportunities for people at risk of homelessness and the need for affordable housing with supports. In 2018, Raising the Roof launched the Reside program, based on a successful model from the UK. Through the innovative, collaborative, holistic Reside program we are able to provide a long-term solution to prevent and end homelessness in Canada. In 2016, there were 1.34 million empty and temporarily occupied homes in Canada. At the same time, 235,000 Canadians experience homelessness each year. Through Reside, Raising the Roof acquires vacant or under-utilized properties and renovates them into affordable housing for individuals who are currently experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness. In completing the renovations, Raising the Roof works with non-profit contractors who create paid training and employment opportunities for people who face barriers to employment in the trades. On past Reside projects, 85% of trainees have obtained unionized apprenticeships and other full time employment in the trades upon completion of the program. Following the renovations, Raising the Roof partners with local non-profit or co-operative housing providers, who manage the properties and provide wrap-around supports to residents. Through the Reside program, we prevent and end homelessness through both the creation of affordable housing with supports and employment for marginalized people.
