Did you know that the word “wealth” actually comes from the Old English weal—meaning well-being—and th—meaning condition? The word literally means, “the conditions of well-being.”

Wealth isn’t just about your finances. It’s about personal and cultural identity. It’s about skills, knowledge and abilities. It’s about relationships. It’s about having a safe home and access to transportation. Of course, finances play a role in genuine wealth, but they aren’t the factor.

Wise Practices in Indigenous Community Economic Development

After examining different approaches to Indigenous economic development, this article reviews literature and studies of best practices in Aboriginal community and economic development. Drawing on the conclusions of these best practices studies, it identifies what are felt to be the seven key factors of success for Indigenous community economic development, or “wise practices”. The concept of wise practices provides for Indigenous knowledge and experience to lay a foundation for a strengths based approach to community economic development.

In recent years, the neighbourhood has gained increasing attention as a venue and vehicle for social change. Interest in neighbourhood, or place-based, development has escalated in concert with the body of research identifying the ways in which neighbourhoods can influence both individual well-being across the lifespan and the social and economic conditions of cities, for better or for worse.
