BC Community Impact Investment Coalition Calls for Changes to Facilitate Community Investment

The Community Impact Investment Coalition of British Columbia is calling for legislative and regulatory changes that will enable greater commumity investment in the province.

BC has little enabling legislation and regulation for community impact investment compared with many other jurisdictions in Canada and the US. In Nova Scotia, over $75 million has been invested by provincial residents into Community Economic Development Investment Funds (CEDIFs). Investment into a CEDIF results in an investor tax credit issued by the province, which incentivizes Nova Scotians to keep a portion of their wealth circulating within their own communities. CEDIFs are successfully financing renewable energy, agriculture and community economic development projects and businesses.Read more

          Scaling up Transition in Peterborough

          Blog by Rob Hopkins

Like many Transition, and other changemaking initiatives around the world, Transition Town Peterborough (TTP) has been giving some serious thought to how it might scale up its impacts.  Founded in 2007, but built onREconomy principles long before the term ‘REconomy’ was even used, entrepreneurship has always been at the heart of what they do.  One of the group's founders, Fred Irwin, was recently asked at the group's annual Purple Onion Festival what gives him hope.  The video above captures his response:

Local Economic Development Lab Field Book

The Local Economic Development Lab (LEDlab) Field Book was born from the regular incoming requests for information we receive about our program model. This field book is intended for universities, municipalities, non-profits and community development organizations that wish to replicate the LEDlab model, which is at its core a university-community partnership that leverages a large Mitacs research grant for social change.

However, this field book is not a step-by-step guide or a recipe for how to apply the model. Every lab is as unique as the problem it tries to solve and the environment it is embedded in.

Shaping Inclusive Markets: How Funders and Intermediaries can Help Markets Move toward Greater Economic Inclusion

The current global crisis of economic exclusion and inequity has millions of people in poverty with limited opportunities to escape. The questions of how markets work, and who they work for, have never been more pressing.

Truly inclusive markets lead to expanded opportunity for more broadly shared prosperity, especially for those facing the greatest barriers. With support from The Rockefeller Foundation, we analyzed historical cases where such inclusive transformations actually occurred in order to understand the ways in which they were achieved. Using these insights, we offer practical recommendations for funders and intermediaries seeking to enable more of these shifts in the future.
