On February 11th, Community Supports for Immigrant Entrepreneurship will draw on lessons from the Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers and the Montréal Community Loan Association in considering how to improve immigrant settlement and integration in Canada. Finally, on April 23rd, former Ontario MLA Tony Martin will share findings from his research into the question Can CED Catalyze a National Poverty Reduction Strategy?

Station 20 Proves its Worth to Community & Investors

In 2009, the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses opted to forgive their $250,000 loan to the then-fledgling Station 20 West project. That investment is already paying off dividends, according to a recent Star Phoenix article. Four years later, Station 20 has already had major impacts in the Pleasant Hill neighbourhood, and has served as an anchor for new developments in the area. This innovative community hub describes itself as a "one-stop shop for medical, health, nutrition, employment and housing services."

Local Labels Hitting the Shelves at Good Food Junction

Finding locally grown food in Saskatoon is about to get easier, thanks to an innovative labeling system about to hit the shelves at Good Food Junction at Station 20 West. The grocery store has partnered with Localize, an Alberta company that provides grocery stores with labels for locally grown foods. Localize uses four criteria to give local food a score out of 10 including where the owners are from, and where production and processing happens, where the ingredients are created.

Build Employment Skills With Quint

Quint Development Corporation (CCEDNet member) is off to a busy start in 2014 by offering several programs to build community and individual capacity. Upcoming Mini-Workshops: Need help with job readiness? Quint's Core Neighbourhoods at Work is offering three workshops in January on resume writing, job hunting and interview skills. GED Preparation Program: For people interested in writing a GED exam, and are in of a refresher on the topics. Classes being on Jan. 27 for this free course. WHMIS & TDG Training: Many jobs in Saskatoon require WHMIS & TDG, so Quint is offering free WHMIS & TDG training through Victory Safety and Training beginning Feb. 6.

Buying Local: Tools for Forward Thinking Institutions details specific policies and practices for economic development through local purchasing.

 

CBCA ConsultationConsultation on the Canada Business Corporations Act

Industry Canada has launched a 90-day consultation on the Canada Business Corporations Act (CBCA). Importantly, one of the items under consideration is the incorporation of hybrid enterprises, titled Socially Responsible Enterprises (SREs), which are broadly defined as entities who use a “commercial business model to encourage social change.” Submissions are being accepted until March 11, 2014.

 

Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada to Launch in April

CCA AGM Vote to Create "Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada"Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada (CMC), Canada's new national association representing co-operative and mutual enterprises, will officially launch its operations on April 1, 2014. This new bilingual organization is a result of years of discussion between the Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) and the Conseil canadien de la coopération et de la mutualité (CCCM) as to how to bring together Canada's English and French-speaking co-operators. CCCM ended its program activities at the end of 2013 but CCA will continue to exist to carry out international co-operative development programming.
