| 10th Annual CD/CED Gathering a huge success! Over 600 community members, CED practitioners, government officials and everyone in between passed through the halls at Churchill High School last week for the 2012 Manitoba CD/CED Gathering. The Gathering has grown steadily each year, and 2012 was no exception - our 10th event shattered previous attendence records! Highlights from the main event on Friday included Premier Greg Selinger's welcomed news that the province will be supporting Enterprising Non-Profits and a new employment pilot project that will help expand BUILD's operations ( read more). Next, Raj Patel dazzled the crowd with a thought-provoking keynote address, which pointed out the flaws in our global economic system and innovative ways communities around the world are boosting equality and creating economic opportunities. Throughout the day, participants were free to select from 30 engaging and innovative CED workshops. At lunch, everyone was treated to a delicious meal catered by eight local social enterprises. We would like to thank all attendees, volunteers, workshop hosts, and sponsors. A special thank you to our dedicated Gathering Planning Committee, and a huge congratulations to Sarah Leeson-Klym, our Gathering Coordinator. We hope to see you next year!
Time to put the horse before the cart: social infrastructure
Roads, bridges and sewer systems. This is what usually comes to mind when we think about of infrastructure investment. A new article by CCEDNet's Kirsten Bernas and Lynne Fernandez of the CCPA argues that the federal government must think beyond these physical forms of infrastructure, and begin dedicating more investment towards social infrastructure like education, training and housing.

Saskatchewan CED NewsStation 20 West now open for business It's been six years in the making, but it was well worth the wait. Station 20 West officially opened its doors on October 17. The 29,000 square foot development includes a commercial kitchen, health clinics, a grocery store, and the new offices for Quint Development Corporation (a CCEDNet member). Not only will the centre become a hub for community development, but the Good Food Junction grocery store will drastically increase food security in Saskatoon’s westside. Book traces history of co-op healthcare in Saskatchewan Ever wonder why Saskatchewan is a major centre for non-profit healthcare co-ops? An important book that explores that topic has been reprinted and is now available. Privilege and Policy: A History of Community Clinics in Saskatchewan tells the story of the introduction of medicare in Saskatchewan and explains the non-profit health co-op system that is now place. The book was written by Stand Rands, and edited by two university professors Greg Marchildon and Catherine Levitan-Reid.
Cuts to Co-op Support Prairie Dog Magazine, a co-operative news source, has published an insightful article that draws attention to the contradictory budget cuts to support co-operatives in Canada. The article highlights the decision, despite the fact that co-operatives are thriving in Saskatchewan, where over half of the population belongs to a credit union and co-ops account for more than a quarter of the top 100 companies to work for in the province.
Register now for Co-operating to Build a Better West Conference  The Co-operating to Build a Better West Conference is only one week away! The event will be held at the Radisson Hotel in Saskatoon November 1 to 3 and will feature notable speakers John Ralston Saul, Mark Surman and Paula Martin. Events concurrent to the conference include the annual Co-operative Merit Awards Program banquet and Co-op Fest, a music festival and product fair.
National CED NewsCommunity Infrastructure Improvement FundThe Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF) is a new, two-year national program that will invest $150 million to rehabilitate and improve existing community infrastructure across Canada. It will help to modernize infrastructure and provide broad-based economic benefits to communities. The deadline for applicants in Western Canada is November 19, 2012. In Northern Canada, The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) will deliver the Fund with an allocation of $6.4 million over two years. Canada's scorecard released on Poverty Eradication Day Hundreds of people across the country took action on October 17 to acknowledge the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The Dignity For All campaign held a joint-press conference and panel event with the Anti-Poverty Caucus in Ottawa to bring attention to the urgent need to eliminate poverty and build equality in Canada. The Citizens for Public Justice also released its Poverty Trends Scorecard – Canada 2012 report to mark the occaison. The report provides an up-to-date look at poverty trends in Canada. >> Read more
Federal Committee submits findings on Co-ops After hearing 60 presentations from co-op representatives and receiving dozens of written submissions, the federal Co-op Committee has released its report on the status of Co-operatives in Canada. The document includes 8 recommended actions that the Government of Canada could take to strengthen existing co-ops and support the development of new co-ops across the country. Among those actions is the recommendation that the government consolidate federal responsibility for co-operatives under a suitable department, such as Industry Canada. >> Read CCA and CCCM's joint response
Global co-op sector meets in Quebec An astounding total of 2,800 people from 91 countries attended the Imagine 2012 conference on co-operative economics and/or the International Summit of Cooperatives. The consecutive conferences took place in Quebec City from October 6-11. The Summit ended with the release of a draft declaration highlighting the significant role co-ops play in the global economy. >> Read more(Source: CCA News Brief)
