Session 8: Prospects and Challenges of the U.K Community Sustainability Act

The United Kingdom Community Sustainability Act passed in October of 2007, five years after it was drafted by the new economics foundation (nef). Proponents believe that the Act holds tremendous promise for enabling local and regional action to reduce carbon emissions and to reduce carbon emissions and advance community development and the social economy.

What are the key components of this breakthrough legislation?
What are the opportunities it opens up for local authorities and community organizations?
What challenges does it confront civil society and the social economy with?
What challenges need to be faced as local government and the social economy prepare for implementation?

This telelearning session features Pat Conaty, with facilitation by Mike Lewis of the BC-Alberta Research Alliance on the Social Economy (BALTA). Please join us!

Imagine Red Deer as a city in which its citizens are able to finance the social infrastructure they want, without total reliance on grants or initiatives from the provincial and federal governments. Come and hear a free presentation by LaVerne Erickson on how we as citizens can use our RRSPs and other financial vehicles to fund needed social infrastructure such as affordable housing, student residences, arts and culture facilities, social enterprise etc.

It takes place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16th at the Red Deer Lodge (Piper Creek Room) For those who are inspired by the vision of what is possible and want to move forward without delay, there will be a follow-up session at 10:00 a.m. the next morning at the Snell Auditorium of the Red Deer Public Library.
