LITE's Wild Blueberry Pancake Breakfast

7am to 10am (come-and-go)
Indian and Métis Friendship Centre

Every November, LITE hosts the Annual Wild Blueberry Pancake Breakfast in the North End. Now in its 18th year, the breakfast has become the largest Community Economic Development (CED) event in Canada with nearly 1000 people in attendance, including community members, media representatives, business leaders, civil servants, students, community workers, MLAs and the Premier – all in support of LITE.

LITE's community partner-catered breakfast supports training and employment opportunities for Winnipeg’s inner city residents with approximately 50 jobs being created or supported by this event every year.

The event features an Arts and Crafts sale that gives 24 inner-city crafters the opportunity to set up a booth free of charge and sell their goods.  The “goods” range from unique Christmas ornaments and jewelry to baked goods and art/photography pieces.

Local musicians and performers contribute their amazing talents towards the event entertainment, and a raffle with locally sourced prizing is an event favourite.

Additionally, all groceries for the breakfast are purchased from Neechi Foods, an inner-city Aboriginal Food Co-operative operating in the inner-city.

This is a truly inspiring and community-focused event – all are welcome!

Volunteers are needed to help with various tasks (some include clearing tables, serving food, selling raffle tickets and more!). If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact LITE (e-mail: lite at mymts.net or phone: 942-8578).

Working with Government I: How Government Works

9am to 4pm

This one day long introductory workshop provides an overview of key institutions, offices, and processes in Manitoba’s political system, introducing voluntary sector participants to:

  1. how government is organized and
  2. how public policy is created; including how a problem is defined, how potential solutions are developed and chosen, how public policy is developed, how public policy is implemented (including through partnerships with the voluntary sector), and how public policy is evaluated.

The day will consist of two lectures by the facilitators and interactive discussions focused on case studies and methods for interacting with government.

This workshop is the first in a 3 day workshop series led by United Way Winnipeg, in partnership with the Manitoba Institute for Policy Research and CCEDNet Manitoba, focused on how government works, building a government relations strategy and framing your issues to impact change in public policy and process. The second workshop, "Building a Government Relations Strategy" is scheduled for February 5th and the concluding workshop "Framing Your Issues" is scheduled for March 5th.

If you wish to register for only one or two sessions, call Linda 204.924.4225 for costs and to make arrangements.

Workshop Leaders

Karine Levasseur, Ph.D
Karine is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Manitoba. She earned my PhD. in the School of Public Policy and Administration at Carleton University. While Karine has many research interests, she am particularly interested in how governments in Canada relate (or do not relate) to voluntary organizations. Her research explores how voluntary organizations can become more meaningfully involved in public policy development, and not just resigned to implement public policy decisions made without their involvement.

Andrea Rounce, Ph.D
Dr. Andrea Rounce is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Manitoba and Chair of the Joint Master of Public Administration Program. She teaches and researches in public administration. A primary focus is government's use of public opinion and consultation; public sector governance; and research methodology. Emphasizing the need to bridge theory and practice, Andrea also works with public sector organizations on policy and governance issues while working collaboratively on community engagement and education projects around elections and voting.
