Board Governance: Meeting Management

October 21, 2014
01:00 PM to 04:00 PM

Running Effective, Efficient and Meaningful Meetings

A criteria for a successful meeting is, if when you leave the meeting you can say to yourself, “That was a good use of my time, we got a lot down and I contributed in a meaningful way.”  If you can say something similar to this statement your meeting was well-run regardless of how it was conducted.   “Effective” means accomplishing your goals; “efficient” means good use of resources: time, energy and money; and “meaningful” means you had active involvement and contributed.

Learning Outcomes:

  • What is needed to run a successful meeting
  • Who does what, and how in successful meetings
  • How nonprofit meetings are unique and unlike most meetings we experience
  • Why it’s necessary to incorporate “Strategic Planning” and “Board Development” in every meeting

In the morning learning about Effective Marketing: Why and How. More than ever non-profits are experiencing the pressures of maintaining existing programs with fewer resources. Understanding marketing and being able to leverage existing resources to meet critical goals is paramount. Effective marketing alleviates stress, ignites support and enables non-profits to achieve key goals.  By providing measurable results, effective marketing is a critical means to access vital funding and support.

Then in the afternoon, get practical with Developing a Basic Marketing Plan. Many organizational objectives fall short of fruition due to a lack of planning and structure. Without a basic marketing plan in place, critical details get lost and focus becomes diffused amid immediate needs and competing demands.  Developing a basic marketing plan is a first step to moving forward toward achieving your priority goals with confidence and efficiency, while leveraging opportunities and controlling costs.

Learning outcomes:

  • Defining marketing
  • Identifying important trends in non-profit marketing
  • Understanding the four P's of marketing within your working context
  • Understanding and building a case for support
  • Marketing plan basics: assessing and planning to meet your goals and objectives

Volunteer Management: Engaging GenY Volunteers Workshop

Today's young people are known by several different titles: Generation Y, the Millenials, the Digital Natives, etc. Whatever we call them, these volunteers may be young in age but they are wise in ideas, solutions and energy.

Volunteer managers and administrators aren’t the only ones who work with young people, fostering the next generation of volunteers. There are many other reasons why it is important to engage youth in your organization.

For example, if your organization serves young people (either as your mandate or through a program area) it lends credibility to your activities if there is youth involvement.

This workshop is designed to help you tap into the energy and enthusiasm of the smart, savvy and digitally-sophisticated 15-30 demographic.

Writing Persuasive Proposals Workshop

It is a challenging time to raise funds for non-profits, charities and community organizations. With increased competition from new organizations, and government cutbacks at every level, more demand is being placed on foundations, corporations and other types of funders. With this increase in demand, funders are really looking at the persuasiveness  of a proposal before agreeing to fund the project or organization.

So how do you win the confidence of your reader and persuade a funder to green-light your project or proposal? By using the art of persuasion!

Learning Objectives

This workshop will take participants through the elements of writing a persuasive proposal, including;
  • The art of persuasion: How to use it so your readers will say “YES!”
  • How to prove that your proposal will solve a need
  • How to plan, and organize the right information in the right place
  • How to write a structured, logical and clear proposal
