CHRA 2008 - Housing and Neighbourhood Renewal

Neighborhood Renewal . . . Does it matter? Yes, because millions of Canadian children can*t escape the cycle of poverty because of the neighbourhoods they live in. How important is it? Very, because disadvantaged neighbourhoods can lead to crime and disengaged youth.
Should you be concerned? Absolutely, because inadequate housing affects all Canadians.

If you believe all Canadians deserve access to affordable housing in thriving neighbourhoods you need to join us at our refreshing and stimulating symposia on Neighbourhood Renewal.

Collaborate with experts and affect change in your community . . .
because every Canadian deserves to have a place to call home.

Montreal, September 9-10, 2008

Building on the momentum of the First Canadian Conference on Homelessness:
...held in 2005 at York University, Growing Home: Housing and Homelessness in Canada supports continuance of the following goals:

* Providing a venue for sharing ideas, experiences, research and practices about homelessness in Canada.
* Addressing a broad range of issues contributing to the complexity of homelessness and focus on diverse homeless sub-populations.
* Engaging all stakeholders in discussions about homelessness in order to reduce the socio-economic, sectoral, and geographical divisions that act as barriers to knowledge mobilization.

In addition, Growing Home: Housing and Homelessness in Canada has added a fourth goal:

* Developing a national coalition of persons dedicated to ending the Canadian housing crisis

Government Policies towards Community Economic Development in Quebec and Manitoba

Date:
2008-10-01

This paper, prepared for the Canadian CED Network (CCEDNet), explores the state of CED/social economy activities in both Quebec and Manitoba and recent government policies in support of them. It seeks to separate out the similarities and differences between the two provinces and their underlying causes. It also suggests what might be unique about the two situations and, where this is thought not to be the case, what lessons others might usefully learn from them.
