Strategic Planning – Your Input is Important!

With our current strategic plan coming to a close, CCEDNet’s Board has undertaken a new strategic planning process for 2012-2014. Over the coming months, we will be asking for members’ feedback on key issues via short on-line surveys. We promise to make these surveys quick and easy. Your input is vital to guiding CCEDNet’s future. Watch your email in-box for more information!

It’s Membership Renewal Time

Year end is also time for CCEDNet membership renewal. Current members will receive their renewal notices in the mail in the coming weeks. A strong and diverse membership is CCEDNet’s greatest strength, so please take a moment to renew your membership when you receive your notice.

If you are not a member and would like to join, click here or contact us at info@ccednet-rcdec.ca

Share the New Policy Priorities for CED in Canada

Last month, CCEDNet members received a copy of new policy priorities, which were also mailed to all 308 MPs. CCEDNet’s Policy Council is encouraging members to share this document within their own organization, and to use it in communications with officials at all three levels of government. Let us know what you think of this new presentation, and who you share it with by emailing Kirsten at kbernas@ccednet-rcdec.ca

Collabetition for Social Innovation announced for 2012

Keep your eyes peeled for B.C.'s first collabetition in 2012. According to a provincial backgrounder, a collabetition is a way to use social media to identify, spread and support social innovation. The collabetition is a partnership between the Advisory Council for Social Entrepreneurship, Ashoka Changemakers, LIFT Philanthropy Partners, TELUS and the ISIS UBC Sauder School of Business

"The province is a participant and supporter of social innovation and entrepreneurship in B.C.," said Premier Clark. "We need to find new ways of doing business - one that involves working with the private, volunteer and non-profit sectors to create solutions that make a real difference in people's lives. Working together, we make real change."

The province has committed $30,000 to the prizes for collabetition and in 2008 contributed $2.2 million as seed capital for the newly launched Resilient Capital.

Social Investment Fund Launched

Vancity and the Vancouver Foundation launched Resilient Capital. This fund provides investors with guaranteed financial returns and a positive social or environment impact. Investments are not limited to social enterprises and include triple-bottom line companies and social entrepreneurs. Two out of three of the projects profiled are based in Vancouver providing investors an opportunity to invest locally.

Citizen Action for Community Economic Development gains traction in BC’s Capital

Three newly elected candidates in the Victoria municipal election signed on in endorsement of the Metro Victoria Community Economy Group's Consensus Statement on Victoria's Economic Strategy. In addition, two councilors from Saanich signed, along with one councilor from each of Central and North Saanich and the newly elected central Saanich Mayor.

Eight local experts wrote the Consensus Statement, calling for a greater focus on community engagement and more support for small, locally-owned enterprises.

“Victoria could stand out as a unique, authentic, locally powered hotbed of social and innovation entrepreneurship and green jobs," says Donna Morton of the Centre for Integral Economics. "Anything less lets down present residents and future generations.”

The statement identifies seven specific actions in which municipal governments can support prioritize local, sustainable community economic development.

Beyond the Camps: Occupation and the Co-op Connection

John Restakis writes about the connection between Occupy and the co-operative movement.

The Occupy movement could point to the ways in which economic democracy is not only more just than capitalism but also more viable. Co-operatives routinely outperform capitalist firms. Occupy could show that the survival rate of co-ops is double what it is for conventional businesses. It could highlight how credit unions, by responding to the actual needs of their members, didn’t engage in the fraudulent financial speculations that bankrupted the economy. Credit unions came through the financial crisis even stronger than before and had no need of massive public bailouts. Co-ops reduce inequality.
