Invitation from Doug Donaldson, MLA Stikine, to participate in 2011 BC budget
When I ran for Stikine MLA in 2009 one of the planks in my platform was a need to have more of a balance between the current emphasis in government on large, externally-controlled, capital-intensive development initiatives and community economic development with the understanding that we always will need the former but an increased focus on the latter will improve stability in our regional economies. As deputy finance critic, I have been able to highlight CED principles and examples while speaking in the legislature and elsewhere. Now I would like to alert you to an opportunity to promote CED in BC by giving input into how the 2011 budget could support CED principles.
The Select Standing Committee on Finance begins its annual public hearing process Sept. 15 to solicit input on the 2011 budget. The committee is visiting communities across BC during the public consultation, as well as connecting with presenters through video-conferencing and encouraging written submissions. We are a bipartisan committee with six Liberal and four NDP MLAs (I am deputy chair). Once all the submissions are gathered by Oct. 15, the committee deliberates on a set of recommendations delivered to government in a report Nov. 15. Ways in which the government can encourage CED in the province -- through strategies, policies, programs, funding etc -- would be excellent topics for submissions. To register for a public hearing, a video-conference or to find out about a written submission, visit the committee's Website, www.leg.bc.ca/
Hope to see you at one of the public hearings -- it would be a powerful way to make the benefits of CED better known to political decision makers.
The Use of Par Value Shares - Special Edition of the Ontario Co-operative Association
The September 10th edition of the Ontario Co-op Association's newsletter published articles arguing for and against the use of par value shares. INteresting debate for anyone interested in reforming capital to work better for communities. In BC, for-profit co-operatives can sell investments shares, not as a replacement to membership shares, rather in addition to membership shares. Get the goods here.

Local Development and the Global Economy - October 22 & 23 in Vancouver
Many forms of capital - both natural and financial - are largely controlled by organizations and interests outside of local communities. The recent world-wide financial crisis and consequential, current recession has highlighted many of the features of globalization and their impacts. In response, and maybe more than ever, communities are discovering new ways to make their economies more resilient by drawing from their own resources and interests as well as collaborating with government, business and the non-profit sector.
