Profile: Momentum's Train the Trainer Program
Momentum, a Calgary based non-profit organization, has an innovative way to fortify financial literacy in communities across Canada. The program is called Train the Trainer (TTT) and, like all the work pursued by Momentum, is premised on the idea of capacity building. The process begins by equipping local leaders with the tools and the confidence needed to establish their own (or improve upon an existing) financial literacy initiatives. Through outreach and facilitation the hope is that with greater financial literacy, people of all income levels will be in a position to save and become debt free.
From the group’s onset, Momentum has set its sites on addressing root causes of the persistent levels of poverty amid a city with such elevated rates of economic growth and prosperity. Their approach is asset-based, which sees the path to transcending barriers as equipping people with tools, be it financial, social, personal or otherwise.
Despite its roots as a free program, TTT has since adopted a social enterprise approach to ensure its long term sustainability. By having program participants cover the basic costs of delivery, the popular program has been able to continue its goals after the initial block funding expired. This crucial transition towards sustainability is both a practical and symbolic victory for the group as it reinforces their belief that social enterprises contribute to building capacity and community economic development. This past year has been a pilot phase for TTT's social enterprise model, but the feedback so far has been very positive. Based on the number of program participants - 30 organizations have participated this year alone, which then have the potential to reach thousands of Canadians with their newly acquired financial literacy capacity. - it is clear that Train the Trainer is meeting a substantial need.

Registration Now Open for the 2011 CD/CED Gathering
Join more than five hundred delegates, including community organizations, government, students and social entrepreneurs who will come together to examine ways to reduce poverty and build stronger communities in Manitoba. The theme for this year's Gathering is "Enough, For All, Forever," and will feature many opportunities to discuss how we can build stronger, fairier, and more sustainable communities.
The 2011 Gathering will include a keynote speech by the always engaging Silver Donald Cameron, 20+ workshops and a free lunch catered by local CED food providers.This free, all-day event takes place on October 21st at St. John's High School in Winnipeg's North End.

Northern Summit on the Social Economy
The Northern Summit on the Social Economy is taking place at the Northern United Place on November 22-23 in Yellowknife, NT. Over the last five years, the Summit has provided participants from all over the North with a forum to share research information, engage in public discussions, and broach a variety of topics relevant to the needs of local social economy organizations.

"Inspire Youth, and Be Inspired"
This summer, eight youth participated in a PhotoVoice research project to explore poverty and their perspectives on the issue in Pangnirtung. The project was organized by the Pangnirtung Youth Club with support from former CCEDNet Create Action intern Kerri Tattuinee of the Nunavut Anti-Poverty Secretariat.
Using the PhotoVoice methodology, participants were provided with digital cameras and went out into the community to use the cameras to answer the question: What is poverty to me? In all more than 150 photos were taken, but three central themes emerged: Our Inspiration; Our Challenges; and, Our Solutions for the Future.

CED Tool: Social Enterprise Learning Toolkit
Enp has launched the Social Enterprise Learning Toolkit, learning modules on the following topics: Governance, Leadership, Blended Value Design(Financial Analysis and Social Value Models), Product & Markets, Business Operations, Customer Relations, Marketing, and Risk Analysis. Each module includes slide presentations, worksheets and references to relevant documents and other resources. The Social Enterprise Learning Modules cover basic elements and information about planning and operating a social enterprise. Each module covers key principles and offers leads and links to further resources.

The Canadian Journal of Nonprofit and Social Economy Research (ANSERJ) is an online open access bilingual peer-review publication. Applied Research Fund at Mount Royal University
The Institute for Nonprofit Studies at Mount Royal University is once again inviting applications to its applied research fund. Two proposals will be funded to a maximum of $7,500 each. Applications should address practical issues in the area of governance, sustainability, or policy. Letters of Intent are due on October 14thand full proposals will be due on November 14th. The full application form is available on request. More information and previously funded research are profiled in the applied research section of the Institute web site.
MBA in CED – An Advanced Program with Community at its Core
Cape Breton University’s Master’s of Business Administration in Community Economic Development is designed for learners and graduates who aspire to play leadership roles in the public sector, in Third Sector organizations, and in community-minded businesses. The program curriculum, in addition to business subjects found in traditional MBA programs, focuses on economic development, leadership, strategy, governance, managing change and international management.
The program also strives for accessibility, as students can complete the program program by attending classes in the summer or on alternate weekends in their city and complete the courses over 22 months.
