Race continues to play a defning role in one’s life trajectory and outcomes. A complex system of racial bias and inequities is at play, deeply rooted in our country’s history, culture and institutions. This system of racialization — which routinely confers advantage and disadvantage based on skin color and other characteristics — must be clearly understood, directly challenged and fundamentally transformed. If our nation is to live up to its democratic ideals — that all people are created equal and treated fairly — then racial equity and inclusion must be at the forefront of how we shape our institutions, policies and culture.

The purpose of this guide is to add to the resources already created by partners who have been working in this field by demonstrating how a race equity lens can be adopted by foundations or other organizations that work directly with systems, technical assistance providers and communities. Our aim is to provide key audiences with transferrable insights and tools that can help them understand what steps to take to make sure they are creating equitable opportunities for the populations they serve.

Key Takeway

Racial justice advocacy today must focus on preventing racism.

Anyone can advocate for social justice. To help prevent racism and ensure race equity, start where you are and with the people around you to champion and embed inclusion within your organization.
