Bridging the Gap - Regina Landlords and Renters on Social Assistance
This short film was created to highlight some of the problems with low income housing in Regina, Saskatchewan. Regina has one of the lowest vacancy rates in Canada (0.7%). Bridging the Gap aims to start a dialogue between the landlords and the government in order to curb the rise in homelessness.

Saskatchewan Highlights from the New Issue of ANERJ
The latest edition of the Canadian Journal of Nonprofit and Social Economy Research (ANSERJ) is now available online. The work of two Saskatchewan-based researchers is featured in the issue. In Cooperative Development Gap in Québec and Saskatchewan 1980 to 2010, Mitch Diamantopoulos (University of Regina) examines the size and scale of the co-op development gap between the two provinces, and highlights its historical origins and significance. The issue also features an article by Brett Fairbairn (University of Saskatchewan) and Catherine Leviten-Reid (Cape Breton University), who write about Multi-stakeholder governance in cooperative organizations.

Homes and Schools over Jail Cells: A Five-Year Plan to Address Poverty
Hoping to set real solutions in action, the Saskatoon Poverty Reduction Partnership has developed a five-year plan to eliminate poverty in Saskatoon. The plan calls for more housing and improved access to education as key components to reduce poverty, particularly among youth. Coordinator Janice Braden says it isn't about coming up with a lot of new ways of spending money, rather it's about taking good ideas from other parts of the country and putting them into place here.

On Air With Social Enterprise Researchers
To celebrate ANSER’s 2011 Conference, the Atlantic social economy research network ran two days of radio broadcasts on Fredericton community radio. These episodes are now available to download. In one program, Mike Lewis of the Canadian Centre for Community Renewal speaks about his BALTA research which looks at community-level strategies for dealing with climate change and peak oil from across the country.

Nova Scotia's Premier Announces Support for Social Enterprise at CCSE4
More than 250 social enterprise practitioners and thinkers were in attendance for the Fourth Canadian Conference on Social Enterprise, which was held last month in Halifax. The event was a great success with many valuable learning events and networking opportunities. Nova Scotia's Premier Darrell Dexter provided a highlight of the Conference with a speech which called for greater support for non-profits starting social enterprises and improving access to capital for social enterprises. Premier Dexter also voiced his support for provincial procurement policies that could support local social enterprises.

ANSER the Call for Conference Submissions
Association for Nonprofit and Social Economy Research (ANSER) is inviting submissions and proposals for individual papers, panels, or roundtable discussions for their Fifth Annual Conference - The Changing Role of Nonprofits and the Social Economy in an Uncertain World. Submissions will be welcomed on topics related to nonprofits, co‐operatives, social enterprises, community economic development, and the social economy in Canadian, comparative, or international contexts. The deadline for proposals is January 9, 2012.

Faith-Based Organizations Engaged in the Social Economy: The Example of Catholic Religious Orders and the Mennonite
New research by Bob McKeon examines the contributions that faith-based organizations (FBOs) are making to the social economy sector in Canada. This study is the second BALTA research project looking at the role of FBOs in the social economy. It looks specifically at the approaches of Catholic religious orders and Mennonite community outreach organizations in their social economy projects.
