REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the Board of Directors, works in a Collaborating Directorship with the Managing Director

CONTRACT PERIOD: Permanent full-time (37.5 hours per week)

SALARY RANGE: $75-80,000.00 plus benefits.

Climate Action Network – Réseau action climat (CAN-Rac) Canada builds social consensus for bold climate action by nurturing a diverse network of over 120 passionate organizations operating from coast to coast to coast. Our members include major Canadian environmental organizations, local volunteer-run organizations focused on regional issues, and organizations of all sizes and scopes in between. While Climate Action Network nodes exist all over the world, Canada’s is unique in that it brings environmental NGOs together with trade unions, Indigenous, social justice, international development, health and youth organizations, human rights and faith groups and local, grassroots initiatives. For 31 years, CAN-Rac Canada has been the only national organization with a mandate to promote the interests of the Canadian climate movement as a whole, rather than any one individual organization.

JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Board of Directors, and working hand-in-hand with the Managing Director, the Executive Director will have overall strategic responsibility for CAN-Rac Canada’s staff, programs, expansion and execution of its mission. While retaining ultimate decision-making authority, the Executive Director will work in close, consensus-based collaboration with the Managing Director for day-to-day CAN-Rac operations. They will possess deep knowledge of core programs, operations and business plans. The ED will present the public and external face and voice of CAN-Rac Canada to civil society allies, governments, and the public.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organizational Vision: Provide leadership for long-term organizational vision and development. Building on existing campaigns and programs, lead the development, implementation and evaluation of an evolving program strategy and a growing network.
  • Public Relations: Primary CAN-Rac spokesperson to media, government, and general public, working in tandem with staff and member organizations.
  • Policy Development: Oversee the development of organizational policies; influence and advocate for domestic and international climate and energy policy as well as justice and equity issues.
  • Resource and Revenue Development: Working in tandem with the Managing Director, set and meet short- and long-term revenue goals. Maintain existing funding relationships and requirements while developing new sources to grow CAN-Rac’s revenue base.
  • Financial Management: Working with the Finance Director, oversee CAN-Rac’s financial management, including asset and cash flow management, investments, oversight/supervision of bookkeeping, audits, budget preparation and annual reports.
  • Board Relations: Serve as primary liaison with the Board of Directors, serve or assign staff to work with Board committees, support the work of Board committees as needed, and assist the Board with board recruitment as required.
  • Membership Development and Services: Working with the Managing Director, plan and set priorities for membership recruitment and retention, and ensure that members receive conscientious service, which includes:
    • Supporting, as appropriate, the work of member organizations;
    • Communicating regularly with members through the CAN-Rac list serve;
    • Organizing, facilitating, or participating in CAN-Rac video calls;
    • Organizing the annual general meeting of members;
    • Preparing and publishing an annual report of CAN-Rac activities for circulation at the annual general meeting of members;
    • Commission or produce policy/discussion/research papers for membership as required.
  • Staff and Volunteer Management and Supervision: As appropriate, in tandem with the Managing Director, hire, supervise, direct and coach staff, volunteers and interns to support the work of the CAN-Rac secretariat.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Expertise on environmental issues, especially climate change, including familiarity with the history and current context of Canadian and Franco-Canadian climate action;
  • Familiarity with principles of climate and social justice, equity, decolonization and anti-oppression theory;
  • Expertise in Canadian and global climate and energy issues;
  • Experience with government relations;
  • Campaigning and/or advocacy experience;
  • Proven program and coalition-development skills;
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining relationships with non-traditional/non-environmental allies;
  • Excellent track record in Canadian fundraising;
  • Personnel and financial management experience;
  • Excellent writing, strategic planning, and supervisory skills;
  • Non-profit administration, ideally with national networks;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication, with strong traditional and social media skills;
  • Experience in the not-for-profit sector;
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline;
  • High level of proficiency in both official languages is required.
