CCEDNet's work in supporting an innovative social enterprise in Etobicoke was recently featured in the National Post. The article profiles Weston Wheels, a social enterprise trains at-risk youth to perform basic bicycle repair, while also offering them employment and life skills training. CCEDNet supported the Learning Enrichment Foundation (which operates the social enterpise) during the start-up phase and helped facilitate a strategic planning session.

Peeling the Layers of Poverty & Homelessness will include a special screening of Home Safe documentary series, which offers firsthand accounts from Canadian children and families who have experienced poverty and homelessness. Calgary Gets a Check-Up
The Calgary Foundation recently took the city's pulse based on responses from 1,050 Calgarians who graded their quality of life in 15 key issue areas such as affordable housing, environmental sustainability, and food security. The report issues the city a clean bill of health with an overall B+ rating. According to the Foundation, the results suggest the city is good - the challenge now is to make it great.

Alberta Co-op Featured in International Publication
The success of Calgary Co-op may be widely known in Alberta, but now the entire world can learn from its achievements. Calgary Co-op is featured as one of the co-op success stories in Building a Better World: 100 Stories of Co-operation, new publication by the International Co-operative Alliance. Seven other Canadian co-operatives, as well as Canada's co-operative movement and co-operative education and research programs, are also featured in the book. >> Read more
Co-op mural coming to Stony Plain
Five Alberta co-ops commemorated the International Year with the creation of a co-op mural in Stony Plain. The free-standing mural depicts the past, present and future of the community's local co-ops. The illuminated mural consists of three panels measuring 480 square feet. North Central Co-operative Association Ltd., West Parkland Gas Co-op Ltd., Stony Plain Seeding Cleaning Association Ltd., The Co-operators and Servus Credit Union are partners in the project.
McKinsey report finds strength in co-operative business model
Co-operatives grow at an identical rate to companies, and those mutuals in the food and agricultural have surpassed their corporate counter-parts. This is the message from the Mckinsey on Co-operatives report unveiled at the International Summit of Cooperatives on October 9 in Quebec City. The report concluded that the co-op sector is well poised for growth, but most pursue opportunities in new and fast-growing markets.(Source: ACCA news)

Unique Position to Focus on Co-ops in University Business Faculty
The Province of Manitoba has committed funding to create a chair in co-operative enterprises for the development and delivery of a co-op business program at the University of Winnipeg. According to Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross, the program will “help raise awareness of the benefits of co-operatives to the general public and act as a resource for the business community.” This one-of-a-kind position will be responsible for developing the University’s faculty of business and economics’ concentration in co-operative management.
The Community Information Database (CID) is a free internet-based resource developed to provide communities, researchers, and governments with access to consistent and reliable socio-economic and demographic data and information for all communities across Canada. This tool allows community researchers to create custom interactive maps from a wide range of economic, demographic, physical and cultural data. >> Read more
