CED Tool: Where We Live Matters

Where We Live Matters is an exploration into what we already know about neighbourhood development, what successes exist and what challenges continue. This paper presents an approach to neighbourhood work based on best and promising practice. It also acknowledges some of the limitations to and challenges of neighbourhood work that arise from the larger social structures and relationships of power in which neighbourhoods are situated and in which residents seek to build their own futures.

The Community Opportunity & Innovation Network Inc. (COIN) of Peterborough has contributed a new video to CCEDNet's Social Enterprise Video in which Executive Director, Frances Wilbur, talks about the work they do to provide training and opportunities for under- and unemployed people in Peterborough, including their recent Trillium funded project Hatch, which is loosely modeled after the Centre for Social Innovation. The video covers the value of social enterprise within the context of CED, advice to other nonprofits pursuing social enterprise, and the important role CCEDNet can play in this burgeoning field. Do you want your social enterprise to be more than just a dot on a map?

Currently more than 1,000 Ontario social enterprises are geomapped on the new www.SEontario.org beta site (in the section entitled: Social Enterprises are on the Map). CCEDNet-Ontario is collaborating with partners to develop a fully searchable online directory of Ontario social enterprises. Just complete the survey to make sure your social enterprise is included. We are also updating the national Social Enterprise Marketplace, so if you're interested in being included in this new resource make sure to select that option in the survey. These initiatives will increase the profile of social enterprises and the products and/or services they sell.

For those of you in the GTA you can also select the option to include your social enterprise information in the developing database of social enterprises interested in the opportunities through the upcoming Metrolinx Eglinton Crosstown project.

CCEDNet is also exploring the potential of having an e-commerce marketplace and is surveying for your interest. Your feedback is much appreciated!

Social Enterprise Roundtables for Open for Business (OFB) Process

Pillar Nonprofit Network, with the support of Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment (MEDTE) will be hosting regional roundtables to gather information from social enterprise practitioners, intermediaries, investors and anyone else who is interested in both the nonprofit and for profit side of social business. This information will be used to report on pressing issues for the sector, including identifying administrative and regulatory burdens that may be preventing social enterprises from starting up and scaling up. The following points are the objectives of this process:
  1. To better understand the social enterprise sector and its priorities and have a coordinated approach
  2. To canvass the sector and  agree upon the issues that should be raised
  3. To identify priorities that meet the Open for Business (OFB) Roundtable criteria and set stage for official OFB Roundtable process*
  4. To share knowledge, share solutions and have transparent exchanges
*The top priorities will be put forward to government in a formal OFB process. OFB roundtable criteria include zero cost to government, no new legislation and feasible within 60 days. See the sidebar for the event listings >>

School for Social Entrepreneurs-Ontario: Now Accepting Applications for the Social Entrepreneur Fellowship!

The School for Social Entrepreneurs-Ontario (SSE-O) is excited to announce that they’re now accepting applications for our Social Entrepreneur Fellowship (SEF). Unlike similar programs across Canada, the fellowship prioritizes your individual personal growth, within the context of your project, and enables you to connect to a network of mentors, experts, innovators and social investors. After SSE-O’s very successful first year, seeing 19 outstanding fellows graduate in May 2013, they’re looking for similarly ambitious and passionate individuals to join their second cohort. If you’re ready to launch or grow your project and are looking for a dynamic and action-based learning experience to support you in this journey, they want to hear from you.

SEF is a 6-month program offered from March to August 2014. Class sessions typically take place on Saturdays to accommodate fellows’ employment during the week; however, students are expected to commit at least 2-3 days per week towards their project. To read more details on the organization and our fellowship program, please visit the website, check out the student profiles from the last cohort, and visit the FAQ page. The deadline to apply is January 6, 2014.

Time for Bold Action on Poverty Reduction!

On December 4, 2008, the Ontario government responded to community pressure by announcing its Poverty Reduction Strategy – a five year plan targeted at reducing child poverty in the province.

Over the past five years this has resulted in:

  • a unanimous vote of the Ontario Legislature committing all three parties to poverty reduction
  • legislation requiring all Ontario governments to enact poverty reduction strategy every five years, with targets and policy specifics
  • increases to the Ontario Child Benefit
  • a range of investments in children’s dental services and early childhood education
  • improvements to social assistance rates and regulations.

Together, these changes have had an impact.  Despite the economic challenges of the last five years, the rate of child poverty in Ontario dropped by almost ten percent – over 40,000 children lifted out of poverty during the first three years of the strategy. The Ontario Government is in the process of crafting the next Poverty Reduction Strategy. Take action! Tell your MPP that strong action is required to build on the last strategy.

Take one minute to sign the petition at Together Ontario and check out the various ongoing campaigns to reduce and eliminate poverty in Ontario. Let’s make sure that the next strategy has the vision and resources needed to build on the progress made for our children during the past five years, to significantly reduce poverty in our province over the next five years.

Mourning the Loss of a Great Canadian Co-operator

The Canadian CED Network extends our condolences to the family and friends of Ian MacPherson, who passed away this November. Ian, originally from Toronto, Ontario, was a pillar of the co-operative movement in Canada, having been the founding President of the Canadian Co-operative Association, when it was created by the merger of the Co-operative Union of Canada and the Co-op College in 1987.  He led the consultation process and wrote the background documents for the International Co-operative Alliance Statement on the Co-operative Identity.  As an eminent historian, he was the author / editor / co-editor of some twenty books and author of over 150 articles, most of them on the Canadian and international co-operative movement.  He was also the founder of the BC Institute for Co-operative Studies. As the Academic Co-Director of the Canadian Social Economy Hub, Ian worked closely with CCEDNet for many years.

In honour of Ian's achievements and contribution to the cooperative landscape, the Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF), in collaboration with the Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) and the Canadian Association for Studies in Co-operation (CASC), is creating the Ian MacPherson Legacy Fund.  The purpose of the fund is to provide university students with support for conference travel, research and engagement with the co-operative sector. To find out more, go to http://cdfcanada.coop/. You can click here to make a donation online: under "donation designation", specify Ian MacPherson Legacy Fund.

Help Put CED in the Federal Budget

The federal government has launched on-line pre-budget consultations and is seeking input from across the country. Through this process, organizations and individuals involved in CED have the opportunity to share ideas, express concerns, and to highlight the benefits of a CED approach. Your submission to the pre-budget consultations will support our collective vision.
