Social Enterprise Toronto Conference 2014: Trends & Opportunities

The conference will facilitate action-oriented dialogue aimed at strengthening the sector. There is still time to register for Social Enterprise Toronto's (SET) premier annual conference, Social Enterprise Toronto Conference 2014: Trends & Opportunities. Taking place from January 29 to 30, 2014 the event will kick-off with a bus tour of Toronto social enterprises.  The second day will be a full-day conference hosted at The Learning Enrichment Foundation in Toronto.  A significant component of the conference will be exploring procurement opportunities through the Toronto 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games, The City of Toronto Social Procurement Framework, and Eglinton Crosstown LRT. CCEDNet's Ontario Regional Director, Paul Chamberlain, will also be speaking at the SET Conference, highlighting key findings coming out of the recent research report Inspiring Innovation: The Size Scope and Socioeconomic Impact of Nonprofit Social Enterprise in Ontario.

Operation Come Home has been working to help homeless and street-involved youth in the Ottawa area. Operation Come Home has created a unique approach that allows the youth accessing their programs to engage in a wide range of meaningful education and employment opportunities. They have several programs that are designed to assist their clients on an individual and personal level. Operation Come Home helps hundreds of at-risk and homeless youth access the services and support their need in order to make positive changes in their lives. Rural Economic Summit of Ontario

Groupe Convex Prescott-Russell, the Prescott-Russell Community Development Corporation, the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, and the Eastern Ontario Training Board, are joining forces in organizing a unique event in Prescott-Russell: the Rural Economic Summit of Ontario. The Summit, which will be held from April 30th to May 2nd 2014, will address leading-edge rural economic themes.  It will gather a prestigious array of speakers of provincial, national and international reputation.  These experts will share their views concerning the regions’ present and future economic potential, underlining opportunities and challenges. This will be a fully bilingual event with simultaneous translation available.

Impact Ontario is a landmark conference that will bring world-changing Ontario ventures together with world-leading investors and intermediaries on March 18. Designed to support deal flow and impact investing opportunities through pitch sessions, one-to-one meetings and plenary panels, Impact Ontario aims to increase capital directed to profitable ventures with a scalable, sustainable impact.

CBCA ConsultationConsultation on the Canada Business Corporations Act

Industry Canada has launched a 90-day consultation on the Canada Business Corporations Act (CBCA). Importantly, one of the items under consideration is the incorporation of hybrid enterprises, titled Socially Responsible Enterprises (SREs), which are broadly defined as entities who use a “commercial business model to encourage social change.” Submissions are being accepted until March 11, 2014.

 

Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada to Launch in April

CCA AGM Vote to Create "Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada"Co-operatives and Mutuals Canada (CMC), Canada's new national association representing co-operative and mutual enterprises, will officially launch its operations on April 1, 2014. This new bilingual organization is a result of years of discussion between the Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) and the Conseil canadien de la coopération et de la mutualité (CCCM) as to how to bring together Canada's English and French-speaking co-operators. CCCM ended its program activities at the end of 2013 but CCA will continue to exist to carry out international co-operative development programming.
