Community Innovation and Social Enterprise

Community-based ventures are a strong part of the Canadian economy for more than a century and recent innovative practices have made the social enterprise sector a hot topic in national and international vistas.  The conference brings together practitioners, researchers, and community organizations, from home and afar, to discuss current practices, challenges, and innovations in advancing social entrepreneurship and improving community livelihoods.

We are inviting social entrepreneurs, directors, researchers, public policy makers, and anyone interested in community-based development, innovation, and entrepreneurship to this popular conference. As a conference attendee, you will hear from and interact with practitioners and researchers on community innovation, social enterprise, place-based development, and their effect on community health and economic development.

We are keeping the conference cost low: if you register by May 15, the cost of the conference is only $190+tax, and that includes our famous Surf & Turf dinner extravaganza (Cape Breton lobster & beef) by the Sydney harbour.

The registration fee includes access to all conference sessions, opening reception, the Surf & Turf dinner party (lobster and roast beef), two lunches, and nutrition breaks.

Venue

The conference will be held on Cape Breton University’s campus. Located on Canada’s east coast, CBU makes its home in Sydney, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Sydney is easily accessible, serviced with Air Canada and Westjet direct flights from Toronto and Halifax.

Local Prosperity: New Economics for Rural Canada is an experience in vision, practice, and action. Join us as we explore the possible, learn from others, and prepare to return home and implement new community building tools.

This conference will focus on how individuals, businesses, and communities can design and then implement a practical blueprint for a prosperous future and a healthy economy – a future that is cooperative, compassionate, and long-term. This webinar will feature some of Community Builders' own research, which examines the factors that attract entrepreneurs and an educated workforce to communities in Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. As the country climbs out of the recession, communities are seeking new approaches to economic development that will give them a competitive advantage in today’s economy.

Looking forward, communities need to be creative about attracting businesses and workers. It is becoming clear that the traditional economic development approach of attracting one major industry through business incentives, long-range tax cuts, or land offerings is not effective in creating a diverse or sustainable local economy. Clark Anderson directs the Sonoran Institute’s Colorado Program, which helps local partners align community planning, economic development and natural resource management goals. A native of Eagle County, Colorado, Clark’s work is inspired by a passion for the people and communities of the West.

Alison Berry is a research analyst at the Sonoran Institute focusing on economics and renewable energy.

Preparation is more affordable than fixing things later. That is why we recommend that the best legal strategy is to get informed about what to look out for and what common pitfalls your co-op should avoid. 

This workshop is an excellent introduction for co-op directors and managers into the common legal affairs facing co-ops. You’ll learn:

  • what you need to know about the legal framework in which your co-op operates
  • ways that you can minimize your risks
  • where to find additional legal resources

The workshop will be led by a lawyer with experience working with co-operatives, and will enable you as a director or manager of a co-operative to build an understanding of common challenges and ways to work around them.

An important note

While this workshop will be led by a legal professional, it is intended to be an introduction and overview of common legal issues and ways for co-ops to plan so that they don’t become problems. If your co-op needs specific legal advice, the BCCA can help connect you to a lawyer who may be able to help.
