The Canadian Community Economic Development Network (CCEDNet)

This is a temporary, full-time, 20 weeks position partially funded by the Canada Summer Jobs and is restricted to students who are 15 to 30 years of age and are returning to school full-time in September 2008. Only applicants selected for an interview will be contacted.

Working with Nomadic Women in Mongolia

The Canadian Social Economy Hub and the British Columbia Institute for Co-operative Studies present our 2008 BCICS/Canadian Social Economy Hub Winter Speakers Series.

This series features presentations by UVic academics, graduate students, visiting faculty, and practitioners discussing topics related to Co-operatives and the Social Economy. These presentations are free and open to all members of the public and university community. Audio, photo, and video recordings of the events will be made available afterwards, from the CSEHub and BCICS websites.

Working with Nomadic Women in Mongolia

Vanessa Hammond, Co-op Developer, First Ownership Co-op

She is an associate of the BCICS. She lives in Victoria, B.C. and is a member of the First Ownership Co-op, a worker co-op of co-op developers. She has lived in 12 countries and worked in over 60. She is looking forward to her return to Mongolia.

Through small felt-making co-operatives, nomadic women in Mongolia's Gobi desert are finding a means to economic security and cultural survival for themselves and future generations. Vanessa Hammond has spent four month-long assignments in Mongolia helping to provide development and marketing assistance to women's co-operatives on behalf of the Co-operative Development Foundation. Vanessa will share her knowledge of the development and operating of these co-ops, and her stories and slides of the wonderful people and stunning landscape of this high desert and mountainous central Asian republic.

We are pleased to announce that the registration has started and that we have posted a list of presenters on our website.

This list is organized alphabetically by the name of the main session presenter and includes the session title, main presenter, co-presenters and abstract.

Registration includes conference materials, breaks, reception, 3 lunches and the banquet:
Regular Early fee is $375.00 CND (includes tax) Student Early fee is $200.00 CND (includes tax)

Additional pre and post conference tours and events available for an additional fee.

Accommodation is available at the University of Victoria as well as in downtown hotels. A cab to UVic from downtown costs about $20.00 each way.

We were very pleased with the overall quality and range of issues provided in the conference submissions and look forward to a most productive dialogue, and a most successful CUexpo 2008.
