Lessons from the UK: Building the Canadian Impact Investment Market

3pm - 4:30pm

Key values: government, non-profit, private sector, academic sector, impact investment, best practices

How much can Canada learn about social finance from the UK? In its 2010 report, the Canadian Task Force on Social Finance described Canada as standing to gain from the expansion of an impact investing market that can “more efficiently connect the best people and the most innovative ideas to the private capital they need to tackle complex societal problems, create jobs and strengthen communities.” In this regard, Canada can extract several important lessons from the UK experience, and from the international Social Impact Investment Taskforce launched by the G8.

Sir Ronald Cohen, who has championed impact investment, venture capital and private equity in the UK, will speak about the imperative to harness entrepreneurship, innovation and capital to address social challenges. Join us at this MaRS Global Leadership event, where Sir Ronald will speak about:

  • Key factors that have accelerated the growth of the impact investment market in the UK;
  • lessons drawn from venture capital markets;
  • the potential for additional actions by governments, financial institutions, entrepreneurs and other actors to contribute to the growth of a global impact investment market;
  • early findings from the Social Impact Investment Taskforce launched by the G8, which Sir Ronald chairs and which Ted Anderson, director of the MaRS Centre for Impact Investing, serves on as Canada’s non-government representative; and
  • possible lessons for Canada in building its impact investment market.

The UK has pioneered a number of developments in impact investing. The launch of Big Society Capital in 2012, under Sir Ronald’s chairmanship, is perhaps the most notable—this impact investment bank manages £400 million in unclaimed assets from British bank accounts combined with £200 million from commercial banks, and directs significant amounts of capital to social sector programs and enterprises in the UK.
