The Sierra Youth Coalition is looking to hire two students in the Saskatoon region.
Positions : Youth Action Gathering Coordinator (university) ; Youth Action Gathering Logistics Coordinator (university or high school).
The Youth Action Gathering is a free (or very low-cost) 4-6 day workshop training event for youth ages 14 to 19. Topics of the workshops will include anti-oppression (mandatory); and a variety of other topics such as: direct action training; media training; urban agriculture; bike mechanics and organizing Critical Mass events, Environmental Justice 101, etc. The project in Saskatoon is done in cooperation with the We Are Many Festival. We are hoping to help the ambitious city project by training a team of young SYC volunteers to assume leadership roles in their community.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: JUNE 5 2008 (please excuse the short deadline, funding just came in and we need to get the ball rolling...)
Contract Duration: 12 weeks
Responsibilities: Recruit 10-25 participants (outreach to local community groups and schools) Create a schedule for the event undraising (you will have a 1000$ seed money budget from SYC to start off the project) ind a space for your event Recruit workshop leaders and facilitators Budgeting and reporting Team building and supervising a group of volunteers
Preferred Qualifications: Background in direct action and community organizing (environment and/or social justice) Experience working with youth Knowledge of SYC's mission and organizational goals Ability to multitask and organize an event in a short time period Project management experience (experience budgeting, planning, executing and reporting) Good communications skills (English) Passion for the cause and the ability to inspire youth
