1. AGM and Board Election Results

The 2011 Annual General Meeting was held on June 7 at the offices of the Learning Enrichment Foundation, the evening prior to the Ontario CED Conference. This was the first time an AGM has been hosted by a member – thanks to Peter Frampton and the LEF team for the warm welcome.

This was also the first year that the AGM was broadcast via webinar, a practice we hope to continue in the future.

Congratulations to Michael Farris, Diana Jedig and Carol Madsen who were elected to the Board of Directors for 3-year terms, and thank you to all the candidates who stood for election. CCEDNet’s President, Caroline Lachance, also expressed special gratitude to outgoing Board members Natasha Jackson, Roz Lockyer, Stacia Kean and Brad Franck.

2. Manitoba Regional Governance Committee Members Elected

Last fall, CCEDNet’s Board put in place a framework allowing for the formal creation of regional committees.

Following up to the provincial policy forum held last fall, our Manitoba members met again at the end of April for a 2011 Spring Member Meeting, and in May elected nine members to the new Manitoba Regional Committee. Congratulations to:

3. Regional Conferences Successful

This spring, CCEDNet partnered with member organizations to hold regional conferences in Vancouver, Northwest BC, Saskatoon and Toronto. Altogether, nearly 500 people participated in the conferences and numerous related events.

Don’t forget that our biggest regional conference, the 9th annual Manitoba Gathering is coming up this October 21 in Winnipeg.

4. A Movement Illustrated in Regional Member Posters

5. Recent CCEDNet Webinars

CCEDNet has offered a number of virtual learning events recently. Sessions leading up to the Ontario regional conference explored food security, alternative energy and health.

Our International Committee has also held sessions on building local food systems in Canada and Japan, the co-construction of public policy for the social and solidarity economy in Mali, community forestry in BC and Nepal, and microcredit in Haida Gwaii and Bolivia.

6. Research Partnerships Assessment Tool

CCEDNet’s Research Advisory Committee has prepared an assessment tool that asks key questions designed to help community organizations as they consider participating in a research partnership. Aiming to assist organizations in thinking through the issues of partnering for research, this document is based on what CCEDNet and its members have learned through reflecting on the successes and challenges of past projects, and is provided to CCEDNet members to support them in developing strong partnership relations in their future projects.

8. International Forum on the Social and Solidarity Economy Early Bird Registration Deadline Extended

Although over 550 people from almost 50 countries have now registered for the Forum, organizers have extended the early-bird registration deadline to July 22nd.

With a thousand people expected, this will be the biggest Canadian event ever looking at community-based solutions to the social, economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century.

The Forum will be October 17-20 in Montréal. Registration for community groups before July 22 is $350, but after it increases to $500.

9. Canadian Conference on Social Enterprise

The fourth Canadian Conference on Social Enteprise will be held in Halifax, November 20-22. The program will include intensive day-long and half-day training sessions on topics such as introduction to social enterprise, demonstrating value, governance for social enterprise, business planning skills, marketing, financial analysis, social enterprise franchising, supporting and building social enterprise in Canada.

Registration is expected to open in late July.

10. Contextualizing the Scope and Factors Associated with Evaluating the Impact of the Social Economy

Jorge Sousa of the University of Alberta and J.J. McMurtry of York University are investigating measurement tools used within the social economy and the ways that social economy organizations evaluate their impact. This is vital to better understanding the strengths and limitations of social economic approaches to community issues.

Practitioners, academics, policy makers and "clients" of social economy organizations are invited to complete a survey that seeks to understand how each group values and conceptualizes measurement both within their organization and within the social economy as a whole.

11. Socialfinance.ca Launches Your Guide to Social Finance

At the end of May, socialfinance.ca launched Your Guide to Social Finance, a guide for social entrepreneurs and those interested in social ventures who are considering how social finance can support the opening, operation and expansion of enterprises that have a positive social and/or environmental impact.

Using stories, digital videos and interviews, the Guide takes you through five key questions: the what, why, who and most importantly the how of social finance in Canada and beyond.
