In an effort to reduce costs and consolidate administrative services, this summer CCEDNet’s Board decided to close our Ottawa office and re-locate all administrative positions with CCEDNet’s Executive Director, Mike Toye, in Victoriaville, Québec.
We will continue to work just as closely with our many national partners, and maintain our policy work in Ottawa while enhancing efficiencies in management and operations by having all administration in one location.
This has involved some changes in staff. We would like to say a sincere thank you to Dan Doyle, Nathalie Girard and Bianca Mathieu, who have moved on to new opportunities, and welcome several new staff members. 2. CCEDNet Regional Events in Spring 2010
Given that these are still difficult economic times for many of our members, this summer CCEDNet’s Board decided to partner with members across the country to organize regional events in the spring of 2011 that will offer excellent learning and networking opportunities without the travel costs of a national conference. More information on these events will be announced as details are confirmed.
For people who like bigger conferences, CCEDNet has already begun working with the Chantier de l’économie sociale to prepare the International Forum on the Social and Solidarity Economy that will be held in Montréal, October 17-20, 2011. Dovetailing this, the North American Worker Co-op Conference organized by the Canadian Worker Co-operative Federation will be held in Québec City, October 13-15. Reserve the dates now! teCCEDNet’s Policy Council has been very busy in recent months. In August, CCEDNet was part of a poverty roundtable held in Winnipeg in conjunction with the meeting of the Council of the Federation. Over the summer, the Policy Council has also been commnicating with all provincial and territorial leaders, raising concerns about current trade agreement negotiations with the European Union. Finally. on October 26, Stacia Kean, Emerging Leaders Co-Chair and Board Member from PARO Centre for Women’s Enterprise in Thunder Bay, Lynne Markell, Policy Council member with the Canadian Cooperative Association in Ottawa, and Mike Toye, CCEDNet’s Executive Director, presented CCEDNet’s pre-budget brief to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance. The Committee appreciated the pair of Nipigon Nylons (wool socks!) Stacia brought to illustrate CED in Northern Ontario. 6. Membership Committee Update
Over the summer, the Membership Committee developed proposed changes to the membership fee structure that would allow members who are able to pay higher fees to do so without creating financial barriers. Membership fees are a critical part of CCEDNet’s annual budget, so watch for changes in your membership fee renewal notice this coming December! 7. Follow Up to the 2010 National Summit on a People-Centred Economy
The partner organizations involved in the 2010 National Summit on a People-Centred Economy met in September to consider next steps in the follow up to the event. The key documents – the declaration and recommendations – are being revised to enhance their effectiveness as outreach tools, and follow up with MPs at the event is being planned. 9. Official Release: Vibrant Communities Evalua
tion Report
Launched in 2002, Vibrant Communities Canada is a pan-Canadian initiative through which 13 communities have experimented with new and innovative approaches to poverty reduction. These approaches emphasize collaboration across sectors, comprehensive thinking and action, building on community assets, and a long-term process of learning and change. Although local Vibrant Communities partners may continue their work indefinitely, depending on on-the-ground needs and aspirations, the initiative designed as a formal research project will be completed at the end of 2011. This paper is an initial report on the end-of-campaign evaluation process.

10. BC-Alberta Social Economy Research Alliance New Website
The BC-Alberta Social Economy Research Alliance (BALTA) has launched a new website with research reports, papers and presentations as well as general information about the social economy. You’ll find everything from a section on ‘What is the Social Economy?’ to BALTA’s online North American Reader in Community Economic Development (CED) and the Social Economy, links to social economy organizations and resources, and more.

11. Food Secure Canada Biennial Assembly
Food Secure Canada will be holding its Biennial Assembly, Weaving Together Food Policy and Community Action: an Agenda for Change, November 26-28 in Montréal. The event offers pre-conference tours, international speakers, and a variety of workshops. For more information, see:

12. New Campaign to Increase Co-op Engagement in Fair Trade
The Canadian Cooperative Association, TransFair Canada, the Conseil canadien de la coopération et de la mutualité and Equiterre have launched a campaign to encourage co-ops, credit unions and co-operative apex organizations to adopt resolutions promoting and supporting the advancement of fair trade in Canada. 13. 2nd Annual Community Power Conference 2010 
The Ontario Sustainable Energy Association is organizing the largest events of its kind for the Community Power sector: Community Power 2010, which will be held this November 15-16 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto, ON.
