Master of Arts in Community Development (MACD)

The Master of Arts in Community Development (MACD) program offered through the University of Victoria’s School of Public Administration starts each May. Designed with working professionals in mind, the MACD program builds and develops participant capacity to become successful leaders in the civil society and social economy.

Developed in collaboration with practitioners from the community economic development, co-operative, and non profit sectors, the MACD program is a part-time professional program delivered through a combination of online and residential courses. The program is focused on the practice and policy dimensions of three distinct and overlapping streams; community economic development, co-operatives, and non-profits. Each approach seeks to create social and economic change and relies on diverse resources and partnerships that are rooted in values of empowerment, cooperation and inclusion.

The MACD program may be of interest to you and members of your organization. They would appreciate if you could forward this information to others whom you think could benefit or be interested in the program.

For additional information on the MACD program they invite you to browse their webpage at: http://publicadmin.uvic.ca/macd

Partner Profile

Community Opportunity & Innovation Network (COIN)

Community Opportunity & Innovation Network

(COIN) is a community-focused organization in Peterborough, Ontario that promotes equality, wellness and empowerment through innovative and sustainable economic development. Our mandate is to:

  • Support the development of new team-based enterprises that create economic opportunity for unemployed and underemployed people (ie. Youth, sole-support parents, EI recipients, etc.); and
  • Identify skills-shortage-occupations for our regional labour market, then train/support unemployed people to qualify for these positions.

Essentially, COIN’s operations widen the window of entrepreneurial opportunity.

Currently, we have social enterprises addressing three main themes:

  • The democratization of technology: COIN enterprise ReBoot Peterborough refurbishes computers for low-income individuals, not-for-profit organizations and charities; and TekDesk provides training in computer skills and live technical support for new Canadians and other groups, and is currently providing research on mitigating risk for vulnerable internet users;
  • Sustainable local food system development: COIN has several food enterprises including a café, catering services, a line of local food products, and a healthy school lunch service. These enterprises are pooling their buying power to play an important role in developing Peterborough’s local food distribution system, through community partnerships; and
  • Skills development and healthy living: COIN Enterprise Services helps small businesses learn what is needed to function, The Learning Source provides skills and leisure-based classes at accessible prices, and many of our social enterprises provide on-the-job training for individuals with barriers to employment.

Recently we have welcomed an accomplished new General Manager, Karen Sutherland. Karen has been deeply involved in our community, particularly in her advocacy for sustainable local food and labour issues. Our outgoing Director, Linda Slavin, is staving off retirement as she continues to manage projects with passion here at COIN.

CCEDNet Regional Events in Spring 2010

Given that these are still difficult economic times for many of our members, this summer CCEDNet’s Board has decided to partner with members across the country to organize regional events in the spring of 2011.

The ontario CED events will offer excellent learning and networking opportunities without the travel costs of a national conference. This event will be a unique opportunities for organizations from different sectors to connect and share their experiences in building fairer and stronger local economies, tackling urban and rural poverty and homelessness, and creating healthier and more sustainable communities.

The Ontario event is still in the initial stages of developing a event steering group and are excited to have a numbe of organizations involved already.  If you are interested in being involved and providing your input into the planning process please contact the Paul Chamberlain in the Ontario office.
