1. 2009 National CED Conference and CED Week!
In recognition of the strong and vibrant community economic development sector in Manitoba, as well as the National CED Conference held in Winnipeg in early June, the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs issued a proclamation declaring it "CED Week in Manitoba!" Participants attended more than 40 workshops, 5 full-day site visits, and heard passionate keynote speakers from Pukatawagon, Manitoba as well as Quebec, Guatemala, and Bolivia. Particpants also contributed to a collective National Action Planning forum. The Conference, hosted by SEED Winnipeg and Ka Ni Kanichihk, focused on exploring Indigenous Models of CED.
The Province of Manitoba and the Canadian CED Network also partnered to bring together more than 60 civil servants to hear about innovative and effective CED-related policy initiatives from Nunavut, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, and Ontario. As well, the Canadian CED Network's Food Policy Working Group organized a forum attended by more than 50 people from all parts of the country to talk about building a national policy framework for strengthening local food systems in Canada.
These activities all emerged out of the priorities identified by members: bringing people together to learn from each other, to find solidarity and support; to explore supportive policy frameworks that enable CED; to profile effective models and practice; to raise the profile of CED; to create space for members to identify priorities for advancing our work and for building a supportive environment for CED activities in Canada.

2. The Canadian CED Network endorses anti-poverty campaign Dignity for All
In the final month before Parliament rose for the summer, Dignity for All campaign staff and committee members were active in their engagement on Parliament Hill.
Several organizations appeared before the HUMA committee as part of their hearings on the federal contribution to reducing poverty in Canada. The campaign has three goals:
- A comprehensive, integrated federal plan for poverty elimination
- A Federal Act to eliminate poverty, promote social inclusion and strengthen social security
- Sufficient federal revenue to invest in social security
3. Pre-Budget Submission by the Canadian CED Network: Recommendations for a Sustainable Economic, Social and Environmental Future
Executive Summary
The tax and program spending levers available to the federal government provide a number of opportunities to catalyze entrepreneurial initiatives that contribute to sustainable and inclusive economic development. As part of a whole-of-government approach to supporting community innovation and social entrepreneurship, incentives to leverage private investment as well as direct federal investment are vital measures that can enhance prosperity and contribute to Canada's efforts towards a sustainable economic, social and environmental future. Compared to other countries, Canada is falling behind in this field. Our recommendations for measures that the 2010 Budget can take to begin catching up are:
- Create a Greater Role for Social Enterprise in Economic Revitalization
- Provide Sustained Support for Community Economic Development Organizations and Community Capacity Building
- Improve Access to Capital

4. The Canadian CED Network welcomes new Board member, Ryan Gibson
Originally from rural Manitoba, Ryan is a Research Affiliate with the Rural Development Institute of Brandon University. For the past seven years Ryan has been engaged in community development projects and processes focused on rural and Northern governance, regional collaboration, co-operatives, community foundations, and rural revitalization. Ryan Gibson is the Chair of the Canadian CED Network's Membership Committee.
5. The Canadian CED Network contributes to national and international agenda for community- based research
The Canadian CED Network is represented on the steering committee of Community-Based Research Canada, a new cross-sectoral network of universities and civil society organizations pushing for greater community-university-government partnerships in research that will impact real needs in Canadian communities.

- A report has been produced that provides the first comprehensive analysis of the challenges and opportunities of community university partnerships in contributing to the sustainable development of Canadian communities. Download the paper here.
- A related international network, the Global Alliance for Community Engaged Research, has also produced and presented a brief to UNESCO's World Conference on Higher Education in July. Download the brief here.
- A symposium in Ottawa last May brought together practitioners and university representatives to debate the importance of civil society partnerships with universities and colleges, and the need for anti-oppressive research to give power to citizens in influencing policy and learning. 6. A CED Dating Service? Looking at CCEDNet's CEDTAS Initiative

All kidding aside, this is one way to describe the pilot project community leaders in Winnipeg launched three years ago. They had identified the same thing as the Canadian CED Network did when it surveyed community economic development (CED) organizations in 2002: many people active in CED feel that they lack many of the skills required to pull off all the projects that need doing.
This is why one of the pillars of the first National CED Policy Framework concerned building the capacity of communities. That is also why CCEDNet stipulated that a capacity building component (if only $18 million over five years) was essential to the ill-fated federal Social Economy Initiative back in 2004.
To answer this need for capacity in Winnipeg, four groups simultaneously arrived at a series of diverse but related concepts. They ranged from the provision of mentoring and side-by-side training in proposal writing, budgeting, management, project development, and governance, all the way to direct engagement of technical professionals, after the example of the Community Design Centre in Pittsburgh. The provincial government, which was interested in funding to address this community need, asked the parties to go into a room together and not come out until they had agreed on one unified concept.
7. Social Enterprise: a Viable Instrument for Effective Immigrant Settlement
The Canadian CED Network's Immigrant Settlement and Integration through Social Enterprise (ISISE) project aims to illustrate that social enterprise is a highly useful model in assisting immigrants integrate into Canada.
An essential first step for the project is surveying immigrant social enterprises and organizations that support immigrant social enterprise development, to discover practices organizations identify as central to their mission.

Over four hundred delegates from community, the non-profit sector and government will come together to share ways to reduce poverty in Winnipeg. 9. Membership Committee recruiting new members!
The membership committee is a dedicated group of practitioners within the Canadian CED Network that recruits new members and advises on marketing, membership benefits and services to support the members' capacity to advance CED across Canada. The underlying purpose of the Membership Committee is to draw upon the wide range of CED experiences in CCEDNet's membership so that the Network successfully embraces the political, economic, social, ethnic, gender and regional diversity of the sector and the country. We need your passion, excitement and skills!

Inner City Renovation Inc is an innovative business that operates in inner-city Winnipeg and employs people on the margins of the workforce, many being Aboriginal. CBC's "The National" prepared a feature on Inner City Renovation, its employees and its organizer/manager, Marty Donkervoort. The show aired on June 30th as part of their series, Canadians Making a Difference.
CTV featuring Spence Neighbourhood Association
CTV's Jon Hendricks on how a once-troubled Winnipeg neighbourhood is growing into something different. The Spence neighbourhood has struggled with violence and poverty, but several programs - including a community garden - are helping turn the area around.

Emerging Leaders in the Social Economy Research Scholarship Program
The Canadian Social Economy Hub (CSEHub) is inviting proposals for research scholarships from practitioners and students under 30-years old who are working in the Social Economy. This scholarship program is intended to promote original research by "emerging leaders" in the Social Economy that will advance knowledge for the sector, and enhance the capacity of successful candidates to further strengthen the Social Economy in academic and practitioner sectors in Canada. The Program will provide scholarships of up to $3,000 per recipient towards salary replacement, national/international travel, or other actual costs of conducting research and producing a research report for publication by CSEHub. Emerging Leaders in the Social Economy 1st Intake - Research Scholarship Winners
The CSEHub is proud to announce two winners of the Emerging Leaders Scholarship Program's first intake. The proposals were submitted on April 15th 2009, and two hard-working youth are now the recipients of $3000 to help with their research projects. Learning Enrichment Foundation - Canadian CED Network Member Profile

Beginning in 1978, in response to a pressing need to address social, educational and employment concerns in the city of York in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), a number of community stakeholders gathered together to form the Learning Enrichment Foundation (LEF). Initially, LEF provided multicultural theater for children, but quickly grew in scope to include a number of programs and services, including skills training, youth counseling and childcare. Canadian Index of Wellbeing
On Wednesday, June 10, the Institute of Wellbeing launched the Canadian Index of Wellbeing. The Index has been developed by a number of non-governmental (and some institutional) partners under the leadership of the Atkinson Foundation. CIW's new website has been live since June 10th. Commemorative Book "A Century of Co-operation" Now Available
One of the highlights of the Canadian Co-operative Association's National Congress in Ottawa was the launch of A Century of Co-operation, a commemorative book by Canada's pre-eminent co-op historian, Ian MacPherson. The 234-page book chronicles the history of Canada's co-operative movement through text and images from the movement's beginnings to the present day. The book can be ordered HERE.
