Report Illustrates Housing Need in Halifax
The Affordable Housing Association of Nova Scotia recently released their year-end report on housing and homelessness in Halifax. Using the housing continuum model, this report demonstrates the urgent need to provide diverse housing opportunities for families of all income levels. The Affordable Housing Association also advocates for a housing first program and the preservation of existing affordable housing. The report concludes with a housing report card, which traces the availability of housing over the past 5 years.
A Social Enterprise Hub on the Island
Prince Edward Island could become an innovative hub for solutions to food security challenges, according to a
recent article by Enterprising Non-Profits. Given the province's small size, strong community ties, and vulnerability to environmental changes, Adam MacLean believes the Island could become an incubator for food security and employment solutions. Social enterprise could play a major role in this development. Demonstrating PEI's potential in action is BID Inc. (Bid. Invest. Develop.), which the founder describes as P.E.I.'s first social enterprise for entrepreneurship. Read enp's story about BID

Tracing Twenty Years of Child Poverty in Nova Scotia
Since 1999, Nova Scotia Child Poverty Report Cards have recorded changes in child poverty rates to track progress on the government of Canada’s 1989 promise to end child poverty by the year 2000. The news is not good. Since 1989, child poverty rates remain higher for children under six, and for children living in female lone-parent families. The data also reveal that it is increasingly the case that many families with children are not able to rise out of poverty despite securing full time/full year employment. Despite this unsettling data, the CCPA's report also provides realistic strategies moving forward.
Community Food Co-op Announces Expansion
The Community Carrot Co-op (a CCEDNet Member) announced exciting expansion plans earlier this month. The Co-op has purchased a building in the North End of Halifax with the intent of bringing a new grocery store in the neighbourhood. The goal of the Community Carrot is to provide fresh and affordable food to a community that has long lacked access to healthy food options. This project was made possible by funding and loans secured from local investment funds and credit unions.

The Marks are In: Canada's Poverty Report Card 2013
The 2013 national report card on child and family poverty presents the latest poverty statistics in Canada and makes policy recommendations for taking leadership on this challenge. The report, titled
Canada's Real Economic Action Plan Begins with Poverty Eradication, sets out practical actions the Canadian government can take that would reduce the child poverty rate by 15% and also highlights the need for a national strategy on affordable housing. The report also calls for a public system of high quality early childhood education and childcare services that are affordable and available to all children.
Celebrating the Legacy of a Great Canadian Co-operator
Canada’s co-operative movement mourned the passing of one of its leaders last month - historian, educator, and passionate co-operator Ian MacPherson. Ian was a pillar of the co-operative movement in Canada, having been the founding President of the Canadian Co-operative Association, and a prolific author of dozens of books and articles. He was also known internationally for his role in the 1995 revision of the co-operative principles and his work linking co-operatives to peace and social cohesion. To honour his legacy, a group of co-operative organizations have partnered to establish the Ian MacPherson Legacy Fund, which will support students undertaking co-operative research and engagement projects.
Celebrating Canada's Social Finance Leaders
The second annual Social Finance Awards were held in Toronto earlier this month to celebrate the organizations and community leaders that are catalyzing the Canadian social finance marketplace. This year's event, titled Progress & Possibility: Building a Market for Impact, was hosted by SocialFinance.ca and the MaRS Centre for Impact Investing. Among the many impressive nominees, this year's winners were:
- Excellence awards: Vancity (community development), Schulich School of Business at York University (sector talent building), Edmonton Community Foundation (mission investing)
- Most Promising Social Finance Collaboration: Rise Asset Development. Runners-up: Microloan Fund and Sarona Asset Management
CED Tool: Where We Live Matters
Where We Live Matters is an exploration into what we already know about neighbourhood development, what successes exist and what challenges continue. This paper presents an approach to neighbourhood work based on best and promising practice. It also acknowledges some of the limitations to and challenges of neighbourhood work that arise from the larger social structures and relationships of power in which neighbourhoods are situated and in which residents seek to build their own futures.
