Poverty, homelessness, environmental degradation, inadequate child care, and gaps in social programs are resulting in worsening conditions in many communities. Community economic development offers a holistic approach to tackling these issues. In order to be successful, it needs a supportive public policy environment.

Capturing Opportunities 2009 is the Place to Be!

Capturing Opportunities is Manitoba's premier rural business and community conference for entrepreneurs, business and community leaders, private/public organizations, young people and volunteers. The key themes for this year's event are: 

The "Green" Economy

  • Make business connections to identify lucrative new ideas and markets within this emerging sector
  • Learn how businesses are capitalizing on success in the green economy

Entrepreneurship

  • Take advantage of private, one-on-one consultations with business professionals to help you increase your business profitability.
  • Identify proven approaches to business investment opportunities.
  • Meet the Manitoba creators of the Clodhopper candy as they share their secrets to business success (also of special interest to Great Manitoba Food Fight participants)
  • Learn how to cash in on opportunities from the young entrepreneur who was the creative inspiration behind the Dove Beauty campaign. Ben Barry will stimulate the entrepreneurial spirit in us all. (also of special interest to youth delegates)

Community Economic Development

  • Be inspired by international speakers who know "what works" in economic development and community issues.

Job Description
The St. Matthew's Maryland Community Ministry Summer Program Coordinator is responsible for assisting people in the West Central area of inner city Winnipeg to take action towards a better quality of life through building capacity. This will be done through using a community development approach in community gardens, family outings and events. The Coordinator will work with community residents, leaders, and various community agencies to:
