RECESSION: Shrinking Paycheques, Failing Health

You are invited to join us for this season's final event of the Healthy Living in the Inner City Speakers Series,Thursday, March 26th, from 6 - 8PM at the Carol Shields Auditorium, 2nd floor of the Millennium Library, 251 Donald.

"RECESSION: Shrinking Paycheques, Failing Health" will feature a presentation from one of the leading experts in the field of the social determinants of health, Dr. Dennis Raphael, as well as documentary clips, and an interactive discussion period.

Admission is free, with refreshments and childcare provided.

Discussion will focus on the structures within society that cause health inequalities. The recent economic crisis will be considered in relation to the impact on peoples' health and wellbeing. Particular attention will be paid to income inequalities, job insecurity, and poverty. Attendees will be challenged to question societal norms and ask themselves, "In turbulent economic times, what actions can we take to safeguard the wellbeing of everyone?"

Guest Speaker
Dennis Raphael, PhD, is a Professor at the School of Health Policy and Management at York University in Toronto, Canada. The most recent of his over 150 scientific publications have focused on the health effects of income inequality and poverty, the quality of life of communities and individuals, and the impact of government decisions on Canadians' health and well-being. Dr. Raphael is editor of "Social Determinants of Health: Canadian Perspectives" co-editor of "Staying Alive: Critical Perspectives on Health, Illness, and Health Care" and author of "Poverty and Policy in Canada: Implications for Health and Quality of Life", all published by Canadian Scholars' Press.

National Chief Phil Fontaine is a dedicated and highly respected leader in Canada. He has been instrumental in facilitating change and advancement for First Nations people from the time he was first elected to public office as Chief, at the young age of 28. He is a proud member of the Sagkeeng First Nation in Manitoba and still plays an active role in the support of his community.

BIO: Phil Fontaine, B.A., LL.D. (R.M.C.), LL.D. (Brock), LL.D. (Windsor), LL.D. (Lakehead), LL.D. (U of Winnipeg)

In the early 1980's, Phil Fontaine was elected to the position of Manitoba Regional Chief for the Assembly of First Nations. When his term expired in 1991, he was elected Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs where he served three consecutive terms. He played a key role in the development of Manitoba's Framework Agreement Initiative, in the defeat of the Meech Lake Accord, and signed an Employment Equity Agreement with 39 federal agencies. In 1997 he stepped onto the national stage where he was elected to the highest elected position in First Nations politics, National Chief. He is now serving an unprecedented third term in office.

  • Description of the principles of 'Housing First'- a model of integrated housing, healthcare and social services.
  • The current paradigm shift in homelessness policy in North America.
