Winnipeg Harvest is sponsoring three events this summer as part of Dig In Manitoba, a partnership with Food Matters Manitoba.

The 2012 African Community Acceptable Living Level Report

Reuben Garang was born in what is now the Southern Sudan. He fled during the civil war and spent many years in refugee camps in Kenya. Since coming to Canada, Garang has volunteered at Winnipeg Harvest, completed his Bachelor’s degree and is working on his Master’s. For this project, Garang talked to African immigrants and refugees to determine what they need to make life a success in Canada.

Lyna Hart is the Home and Community Care Coordinator for the Southeast Resource Development Council Corp. and a Board Member of Winnipeg Harvest. In this PowerPoint presentation, Hart links First Nations Creation stories with the nutrition found in traditional foods hunted or gathered and eaten or used medicinally for centuries by First Nations people.

Guaranteed Annual Income: The Dauphin Experiment
1 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, August 21, 2012
 
Evelyn Forget is a Professor in the Community Health Sciences Department of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. Forget will present her findings on the Manitoba Minimum Income project, or Mincome, carried out in Dauphin from 1974 to 1978. Wayne Simpson, a Professor of Economics at the University of Manitoba, will respond to Forget’s presentation.

 Opportunities for Employment Inc (OFE) is a private, faith-based, non-profit organization. Our mission is to assist individuals to achieve self-sufficiency through meaningful, long-term employment. Our Community Office in the Spence Neighborhood offers employment development workshops, individual employment consulting and a job resource centre.

The Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties (MARL) works to foster respect and observance of fundamental human rights and civil liberties in Manitoba; as well as to promote diversity and work towards building more just and inclusive communities.
 
MARL provides a Human Rights Education Program which aims to educate young people about human rights and civil liberties as well as develop the next generation of human rights leaders.
