CIVICUS World Assembly: Acting Together for a Just World

CIVICUS World Assembly:  Acting Together for a Just World
September 3 to 7, 2012 in Montréal

The CIVICUS World Assembly serves as a primary venue for civil society practitioners, researchers, activists, concerned business leaders and representatives from governments to share ideas and experiences on strengthening citizen participation.

The World Assembly’s main objective is to create a space where a diversity of voices can be heard, a space to exchange experiences, challenges, successes and dreams and, most importantly, concrete ideas for a more equitable and just world. One of the World Assembly’s strengths is its ability to act as a forum where groups from all sectors around the world develop successful models for advancing national, regional and global agendas, and for finding solutions to the crises that the world is facing today.

The CIVICUS World Assembly has previously been hosted in Mexico, Hungary, the Philippines, Canada, Botswana and Scotland. The CIVICUS Board made the decision to annualise the event in 2006, privileging a three-year cycle in one venue. In addition to reducing the logistical burden of organising a major international event, this annualisation allows CIVICUS to focus more intensively on the programme contents, the promotion of the event and on ensuring widespread participation.

The Institut du Nouveau Monde (INM) successfully bid to host the CIVICUS World Assembly in Montréal, Québec for the period 2010-2012.

Women's Voices Project

The Women’s Voices Project is a volunteer-based project which aims to:

  1. Enhance the existing leadership skills of community women by providing training, supports, and helping them connect to a mentor at another community organization doing work relative to each woman’s interest and/or values.
  2. Work with mentors at other community organizations to increase the recruitment and retention of community women on their boards, councils, committees, and other involved volunteer positions.

Project leaders provide ongoing support for the mentees in the form of a $40/month honourarium, childcare $, bus tickets, and 1-on-1 check-ins and referrals.

Following 6 days of leadership training, with a focus on self-care, community awareness, communication, and decision making in the end of August and early September, women will be placed with a mentor. Together, with The Women’s Voices Coordinator, they will  set goals, keep a volunteer log, and engage in a meaningful volunteer experience that may include but is not limited to attending board, committee, or advisory council meetings, and participating in educational and/or community events for approximately 3-4 month from September to April.

The deadline for mentee application is August 15th, however, we will be accepting mentors from community organizations until the end of September - or until all 17 women have a mentor.

All women are welcome to participate in this project.
