Financial Responsibilities of the Board

Not for profit board members and managers have the most important responsibility, to manage the organization's finances. These leaders have to develop, at the very least, basic skills in financial management. All board members must ensure they understand (and agree with) what they are approving. The budget, the accounting information system and financial policies are the tools the board uses to exercise its fiduciary responsibility. This topic will help those who require a better understanding of their responsibility for the financial aspect of the organization.

Certificates will be issued to individuals who complete all 4 workshops.

Making the News: Media Relations for Non-Profits

Most non-profit groups want to be better known, but few have the resources to do advertising. But all is not lost; there is a way to tell people about who you are and what you do--for FREE--by working with the media. Many non-profit organizations don't know how to get the media's attention. They don't know how to write a press release, when to send it or who to send it to. They are also ill-equipped to help a reporter who calls looking for information.

Through this workshop, veteran communicator John Longhurst will help you learn how to get the media's attention, know what reporters are looking for in a story, and provide practical information about how to write a press release, when to send it and who to send it to. He'll also offer tips about being interviewed, how to hold a news conference, what to do when a crisis occurs, and other media strategies.

Joining John will be Boris Hrybinsky, Entertainment & Life Editor at the Winnipeg Free Press; Terry MacLeod, host of CBC Information Radio; and Janet Stewart, host of CBC TV News at Six. Make sure you bring some business cards and story ideas to share with them!

John's book, Making the News: An Essential Guide For Effective Media Relations (Novalis), is included in the workshop fee.

"If you've been wondering why your group or issue isn't getting the media coverage you'd hoped for, this manual could provide a remedy. It's especially good on how the media work, on what we look for in stories and on how to create the genuine human interest that will catch a journalist's attention. If more groups, non-profit or not, followed its practical no-nonsense advice, my job would be easier to do."
Terry MacLeod, Host, Information Radio, CBC Winnipeg

Budget & Cash Management Basics for Non-Profits

There are several activities in the yearly accounting cycle but two are crucial in the not for profit organization, budgeting and cash management.

A budget depicts what you expect to spend and earn over a period of time. The budget is the "original plan" and any deviations from it need to be monitored, explained or dealt with.

Your biggest challenge in a not for profit organization is likely to be managing your cash flow. You need to ensure you have funds flowing in at the right times so that it is available to the organization to flow out when needed. Like the budgeting process, cash flow projections should be done and updated as the organization progresses through its fiscal year. · Learn how to prepare budgets (annual operating, capital or proposal) · How to use the budget to monitor the organization through deviation analysis · Discover the basics to cash flow management · Develop techniques for improving cash flow · Prepare projections and forecasts.
